Committed to Opening Doors: FedEx & Teach For America
Arthur Ashe once said, “When bright young minds can’t afford college, America pays the price.”
I wonder what price America pays when statistics show that one in every five black males in the U.S. drops out of high school, and the current dropout rate for Hispanic males is almost four times that of white males.
I’ve often heard it said, “You’re either part of the solution or part of the problem.” FedEx wants to be a part of the solution. That’s why in 2008, we pledged $1 Million to Teach for America to help expand the size and diversity of the corps.
This investment enabled Teach for America to launch a diversity and inclusiveness program that provides children with more diverse role models and creates a platform to advance conversations about diversity and its impact on children. Estimates indicate only 2 percent of all teachers in the U.S. are African-American males and less than 5 percent of all teachers are Latino males. Teach for America finds it most effective when its corps members reflect the communities in which they serve.
We are proud to sponsor Teach For America. Our commitment is to open doors for students to meaningfully participate in the global economy. Please watch the attached video that shares the experiences from the recent Community Speaker Series & Teach For America Week.
