FedEx Announces Innovation Award Winner at 2013 National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster Conference
FedEx is an innovation leader. To encourage innovation in one of our core philanthropic focus areas – disaster response – FedEx sponsors Innovation Awards at both national and international forums.
On the national level in the US, we sponsor an Innovation Award for National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (National VOAD). The National VOAD coalition includes 55 of the country’s most reputable national organizations (faith-based, community-based and other nongovernmental organizations) and 55 State/Territory VOADs, which represent Local/Regional VOADs and hundreds of other member organizations throughout the country.
At the international level we sponsor an Innovations in Disaster Preparedness Award for InterAction. InterAction is an alliance organization in Washington, D.C. of more than 180 U.S.-based international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).
The FedEx Innovation awards accomplish two very important purposes.
First, they help bring visibility to all-too-often unsung heroes. The NGOs that make up these two world class organizations do phenomenal work every day in communities across the US and around the world. While these organizations include better known NGOs including the American Red Cross and World Vision, they also include lesser known yet tremendously important, highly impactful and effective NGOs.
Second, the awards help bring visibility to groundbreaking disaster response initiatives – new best practice models – and encourage widespread adoption of these models NGOs operating in the disaster response space. Member organizations engage in collaborative work by virtue of their association with National VOAD across the US, and InterAction around the world.
On May 14th, in Portland, at the 2013 National VOAD conference, FedEx had the privilege of announcing the winner of this year’s Innovation Award: Crisis Cleanup. This NGO helped develop a software program called “The Crisis Cleanup Disaster Relief Mapping Tool” that helps organize volunteers assisting with disaster cleanup and recovery efforts. Working with the New Jersey VOAD and Mormon Helping Hands, CrisisCleanup.org has helped organize tens of thousands of volunteers assisting with relief efforts in the northeastern US.
This fall, on the international front, FedEx, in support of InterAction, will be proud to name the winner of the FedEx Innovations in Disaster Preparedness award at an InterAction event. It will recognize an innovative disaster preparedness initiative implemented by an international NGO or civil society organization.
Stay tuned to see who wins!
