FedEx Helps to Spread the Warmth with Project Overcoat
Imagine being outside in 13 degrees weather in the frigid cold with no coat or blanket. Unfortunately, that’s the reality for some men, women, and children who are trying to stay warm during the winter months. But there’s help with Project Overcoat, an annual coat and blanket drive, sponsored by United Way, FedEx, Fox 5, Kroger, and Kiss 104.1 FM who come together to collect coats and blankets for those in need.
For over 25 years, FedEx has supported Project Overcoat in the Atlanta metro area by utilizing its logistics network to pick up donated coats and blankets from the various collection sites and deliver them to nearby social agencies. Through this effort, not only does the local community come together, but FedEx team members also come together to reinforce FedEx’s commitment to being a caring citizen in the communities where our team members live and work.
Lexie Sapp, FedEx Express, Dispatch Manager, has been a long time supporter of Project Overcoat, managing FedEx’s involvement with this program. As she reflects on the impact of this program, she says “working with this campaign every year has been so uplifting by seeing the impact it has on other people’s lives and in our community. It’s a reminder to not take for granted the things we have, especially having several coats in our closet, when some people don’t have one.”
Another FedEx team member who has been actively involved with Project Overcoat, Michael Harper, FedEx Express, Senior Station Manager, recalls being at one of the collection sites and seeing the impact first hand when a young man happened to pass by on his bicycle and inquired about the coat drive. Within an hour, he returned on his bicycle with a handful of coats to donate. As a result of donations like these, in 2015 alone, over 11,000 coats and blankets were collected and distributed.
For FedEx team members like Lexie and Michael, they also recognize this is an opportunity for them personally to give back through FedEx’s support of the program. Michael sums it ups best when he says, “This is something for me that I love because it’s genuine.” FedEx is committed to building strong local communities and Project Overcoat is just one of the many ways that FedEx supports communities year-round through volunteerism, charitable support and collaboration with local organizations and causes.
