Safe Kids Korea: Promoting child pedestrian safety with help from FedEx

June 11, 2014

This is the fifth post in a series of 10 guest blog posts from the leaders of Safe Kids Worldwide affiliates that FedEx works with around the world in support of child pedestrian road safety initiatives. With tens of thousands of vehicles on the world’s roadways, FedEx is actively engaged in promoting road safety. This month we will hear from Ye-Ji Chang, Program Manager, Safe Kids Korea.

Since 2003, Safe Kids Korea and FedEx Express Korea have worked together to educate children and families about the importance of pedestrian safety.

It’s such an important issue here in Korea because road traffic crashes continue to be the leading cause of death for children ages 1-19. In fact, eight out of ten traffic accidents involving children under 12 occur when they are walking in school zones.

We work to prevent these tragedies through a number of initiatives, including child education sessions, distribution of teaching materials for community centers and schools, and special programs such as “Drive Under the 30km/h Speed Limit in School Zones.”

Recently, in collaboration with our sponsor, FedEx, Safe Kids Korea held a pedestrian safety training program titled, “Hi! Mom and Dad! Be a Safety Teacher.”, for children and parents at Gae-Hwa Elementary School in Busan.

It was a terrific program that educated more than 115 children about the things they can do to stay safe while walking to school.

Parents, students and teachers worked together through training sessions to learn important skills such as “the safe way to walk on rainy, snowy, and dark days” and “5 principles for crossing the roads safely.” All the students took a traffic safety quiz as well as crossing-a-crosswalk training and they even learned a traffic safety song.

This year was especially fun because we invited parents to become instructors. They were trained to go into classrooms and train kids about walking safely.

This project and all our pedestrian safety initiatives are part of Walk This Way, the global program that aims to promote the child pedestrian safety worldwide. Since its inception, we’ve reached more than 480,000 children in 1,262 schools in South Korea.

“FedEx has a critical role to play in actively promoting a culture of safety around the world, across the nation, and in local communities as a global express transportation company,” said Eun-Mi Chae, Managing Director of FedEx Express Korea, “We will gratefully work with Safe Kids through our long-running Walk This Way campaign to convey this value and help keep our communities safe and healthy for children.”

Thank you FedEx for your commitment to keeping kids safe here in Korea and around the world.
