The late comedian’s trademark quip, “I get no respect,” describes how some in our industry view step vans.They’re wrong. Step van drivers have proven their mettle. Their skill and professionalism are indispensable to the trucking industry. It’s no exaggeration that step-van drivers are an economic linchpin.It’s safety, however, that places step-van drivers in a class all their own.

In what has become tradition of sorts for FedEx, our National Truck Driving Championships team produced several top finishers and out of those crowned six national champions. Saturday morning began with the announcement of the top finishers in each class, including a 3-way tie in the 5-Axle class. FedEx scored big with 13 finalists in seven of the nine classes including sweeps of Twins and Step Van.

On Sunday 20 June I took part in the first ever Plane Pull in Ireland, sponsored by FedEx Express. The aim of Pull for Sight was to raise money for ORBIS, an international charity that aims to eliminate avoidable blindness in developing countries.

Following the route of a highway that doesn’t even officially exist any more with a vehicle that looks like it should be delivering E.T.? Because we want to remind people of the power of a vision.
