FedEx Earns No. 11 Spot on the FORTUNE World’s Most Admired Companies List

February 16, 2017

FedEx LI 11

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Feb 16, 2017—FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) is once again ranked among the most admired companies in the world, according to a survey published in FORTUNE magazine.

The annual “World’s Most Admired Companies” report released today lists FedEx as the No. 11 ranked company overall.  The survey measures nine attributes related to financial performance and corporate reputation.

“FedEx is honored to have been recognized again among the world’s most admired companies,” said Frederick W. Smith, chairman and CEO, FedEx Corp.  “This honor reflects the dedication of more than 400,000 FedEx team members worldwide.”

This is the 17th consecutive year that FedEx has ranked among the top 20 in the FORTUNE Most Admired Companies List, with 13 of those years ranking among the top 10.

Survey Methodology

The Most Admired list is the definitive report card on corporate reputations.  Our survey partners at Korn Ferry Hay Group started with approximately 1,500 companies: the 1,000 largest U.S. companies ranked by revenue, along with the non-U.S. companies in Fortune’s Global 500 database with revenues of $10 billion or more.

Korn Ferry Hay Group then narrowed the assortment to the highest-revenue companies in each industry, surveying a total of 680 companies in 28 countries.  The top rated companies were picked from that pool of 680; the executives who voted work at the companies in that group. To determine the best-regarded companies in 51 industries, Korn Ferry Hay Group asked executives, directors, and analysts to rate enterprises in their own industry on nine criteria, from investment value and quality of management and products to social responsibility and ability to attract talent. A company’s score must rank in the top half of its industry survey to be listed.

Because of the weak distribution of responses, only the aggregate industry scores and ranks are published in Cable and Satellite Providers; Construction and Farm Machinery; and Wholesalers: Diversified. Results were not published in the following categories due to insufficient response rates: Computers, U.S. Energy, Mining/Crude Oil Production, Petroleum Refining, and Pipelines.

To select the 50 All-Stars, Korn Ferry Hay Group asked 3,800 executives, directors, and securities analysts who had responded to the industry surveys to select the 10 companies they admired most. They chose from a list made up of the companies that ranked in the top 25% in last year’s surveys, plus those that finished in the top 20% of their industry. Anyone could vote for any company in any industry.

The difference in the voting rolls explains why some results can seem at odds with each other. For example, Samsung Electronics fell off the All-Star list as its combustible phone batteries singed its sales and stature, but Samsung moved up one notch within the electronics category when votes from only those in that industry were counted.
