Many of us have strong memories of our favorite childhood book. One we read ravenously in the library corner, or one your mom or dad read just before you went to sleep. But for kids whose normal routine was dramatically interrupted by Hurricane Sandy six months ago, those memories and books may be harder to come by.

This past Thursday September 8 on the corner of Central Park South and 6th Ave, the Hero Portraits September 11th Memorial was unveiled. It was the culmination of a two year effort on behalf of the Hero Portraits organization led by chairman and founder Darryl Lynn in honor of this year’s 10th anniversary of 9/11.

It may surprise you to hear but even in thriving New York City, food poverty is around every corner. Throughout the five boroughs, approximately 1.4 million people — mainly women, children, seniors, the working poor and people with disabilities — rely on soup kitchens and food pantries. Approximately 3.3 million New Yorkers experience difficulty affording food for themselves and their families, an increase of 60 percent since 2003.

It was a cool and cloudy day in New York, and fall was in the air as volunteers gathered at the Lower East Side’s Henry Street Settlement. This was the second year FedEx Cares activities focused on Henry Street, which delivers a wide range of social services and arts programming to more than 100,000 New Yorkers each year.
