FedEx and Heart of America Share the Joy of Reading by Revitalizing a Maryland School Library
March 19th was a very special day for 450 students at Beacon Heights Elementary School in Riverdale, Maryland when they entered their school’s newly redesigned library – new bright colored paint, artwork, furniture, and 250 additional new bilingual English-Spanish books were in the library! FedEx worked with Heart of America to revitalize the school’s library to make it an even more engaging environment for children to learn and foster a love of reading. The day of the library unveiling, included 15 FedEx volunteers, who helped put the finishing touches in the library by completing furniture assembly, artwork, and labeling the new books. In the afternoon, the FedEx volunteers hosted story time in each of the classrooms and distributed two new books to each student.
Heart of America’s READesign program aims to revitalize elementary school libraries to grow their love of reading. Through Heart of America’s READesign program, FedEx is able to enhance the students’ educational experience and encourage learning more about the world and culture around them. As the world economy moves toward globalization, FedEx believes access to educational and cultural materials that reflect diverse communities, like the one at Beacon Heights Elementary School, will help prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow. Through FedEx’s ongoing support, Heart of America has distributed more than 4,900 books and has created three READesign Reading Corners in the Washington D.C.-metro area over the past few years.
