FedEx and World AIDS Day
When I fired up my computer at work this morning I was proud to see at the top of our FedEx intranet home page a post about World AIDS Day and FedEx support for the Healthy Women Healthy Economies (HWHE) initiative. FedEx is a member of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. In 2004 we received an e-newsletter from them about HWHE and its success in east Africa. We immediately reached out to the GBC and offered additional support to them to help with this initiative.
A compelling feature of HWHE was that in addition to HIV/AIDS education and treatment elements, it also had a microfinance component. This third component served to address root issues of women’s empowerment in the fight against this dread disease in a self-sustaining way. As microfinance loans are repaid, the program helps increasing numbers of women.
Facing the statistics on the continued prevalence of HIV/AIDS is pretty overwhelming, but I’m glad through the GBC FedEx is able to join forces with other corporations in the fight. I’m especially proud that we are entering our fourth year of support for Healthy Women Healthy Economies. For more information on this important initiative go to http://www.gbcimpact.org/documents/media/publications/2008-HWHE-Case-studies.pdf.
