FedEx Cares United Way Campaign: Why I Choose to Give Back

When I was 15 years old, I was on my way home from school, and the car I was riding in was hit head-on by a drunk driver. I was rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and was diagnosed with a broken back. My L3 and L4 were cracked in half, and my spinal cord was severely swollen, causing temporary paralysis.
I have never been so scared, but my mom never left my side at the hospital. Through spinal fusion and the implantation of metal rods, she was able to stay with me to comfort me and help the doctors manage my pain. I couldn’t have made it through this life-altering event without her, and I am so grateful we lived in town so she could run home to check on her other 3 children and take turns with my dad and grandparents caring for all of us.
My heart goes out to families whose children are sick or injured and have to incur the expense of a hotel to add to their worries. FedEx Family House offers a solution by providing cozy accommodations within walking distance of the hospital at NO EXPENSE to these families in their time of tragedy. What a wonderful opportunity to bring kindness and comfort to families in need!
During the FedEx Cares United Way campaign our team, Global Brand Management, has volunteered at the FedEx Family House by cooking meals for the families staying there. We were able to use their industrial kitchens to cook and serve chicken enchiladas, rice, and chips and dip, as well as chocolate chip cookies. But my favorite part is getting to sit down and share a meal with these families to hear just how blessed they feel by the FedEx Family House. It is incredible what an impact a warm bed, some food and peace of mind can make during difficult times.
