FedEx Helps to Fight Hunger with the Capital Area Food Bank
Imagine a room full of excitement, enthusiasm, and curiosity, which was the ambiance at the Rollingcrest Community Center in Hyattsville, MD with FedEx volunteers who worked with the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) and local school kids to support the CAFB’s Weekend Bag Program. These dedicated volunteers assisted during a CAFB demonstration by showing kids how to make a healthy meal with fresh produce, including ‘Chef Kim’ (Kim Evans, FedEx Services) giving an initial demonstration for everyone to follow. As a result, the kids learned how to make a nutritious fruit salad from ingredients included in a typical Weekend Bag and were given a bags full of apples, kiwi, grapes, bananas and honey to replicate the recipe with their families at home.
The Capital Area Food Bank offers numerous programs, such as Kids Cafe and the Weekend Bag Program, which provides children with food when they don’t have access to school meals. Both programs serve nearly 5,000 children in the Washington, DC metro area and help relieve some of the burden families face with already strained food budgets. FedEx has worked with the Capital Area Food Bank since 2006, providing logistical and monetary support to a number of its programs, including donations totaling over $55,000.
