FedEx Trucks, Honking Horns and 900 students – FedEx Delivers Careers on Wheels to Snyder Elementary
What do you get when you put 900 students and several big FedEx trucks together? A lot of fun and lessons about the transportation industry.
As a pickup and delivery manager for FedEx Ground in Las Vegas, I have the opportunity to support many community projects. So, when Snyder Elementary asked FedEx to be part of its Careers on Wheels day, we were ready to make an important delivery: education.
With our trucks loaded with FedEx footballs and FedEx airplanes as handouts, the FedEx team spent the morning talking to the students about how the math, science, and language skills they are learning directly apply to our jobs at FedEx.
The students were able to go inside and explore the FedEx trucks. Along the way, the students were able to ask a lot of questions. Some of the common questions were:
1. How old do we have to be to drive this truck?
Answer: It varies by state, but the minimum age to apply for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is usually 21.
2. Are there schools that teach you to drive trucks big trucks?
Answer: Yes. There are lots of local schools that prepare drivers to obtain their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
3. How many packages can fit on the truck?
Answer: This can really be either hundreds or thousands of packages. It all depends on the sizes of the truck and the packages.
4. How long does it take to deliver your packages?
Answer: That depends on the route. Some routes take a just a few hours for deliveries; while others may take all day.
Many of the younger students wanted to honk the horn and pretend to drive. With the older students, we had great discussions about how they can apply what they learn in school to their future careers. Many older students wanted to know details about my job and what level of education they would need to apply at FedEx.
The kids loved the FedEx trucks. I’m proud that we helped the teachers energize their students to learn. These students are tomorrow’s leaders and our future employees, and we look forward to participating in this event next year to help the students grow and develop.
