Hyperbola: Where Function Meets Beauty
Tina Wang loves textiles.
She doesn’t just see fabric or pieces of cloth. She looks for ways to make that fabric better, more functional, more hi-tech and most importantly, more beautiful.
Wang took that passion for textiles and started her company, Hyperbola, in Taipei, Taiwan in 2001, and changed the industry by creating fabric that was functional and fashionable, focusing on everything from outdoor wear to fabrics for the medical field.
In our series featuring women entrepreneurs, we spent the day with Tina Wang and her team. Watch the video above for an inside look at Hyperbola, and read on for Wang’s career path and advice to budding entrepreneurs.
How did you start out?
I majored in Economics. My first job was related with textiles. I was an exchange student in the United States so I wanted to find a job where I could explore the world. Trading textiles was a great job for me. After that, I tried different industries but I realized I love fabric and textiles so much that I had to work in this industry.
We founded Hyperbola because the traditional fabric and textile industry focused too much on manufacturing and technology. The design and beauty of textile was overlooked and neglected. I don’t think anyone was worried about the beauty of fabric when I first started in 2001, so we developed this team to combine fashion and function.
What advice do you have for someone wanting to start a business?
You must have a great deal of courage and perseverance because you will have a lot of failures. You will encounter many obstacles, such as being short of finances, and these problems are normal.
You must be prepared, and not be afraid of hard work and pressure. When you encounter a problem, you have to solve it. You cannot find any excuses; you have to face any problem head on. If you don’t try to solve it that simply shows you don’t want it bad enough.
If you don’t enjoy the excitement of taking risks, I would suggest you find a good company with people who have the same mission as you. There, you also need the spirit of entrepreneurship but when you get off work, you don’t have to worry about the pressure or the problems of running a company.
I think both are okay, they are just different paths.
You have to choose the path that is best for you.
You are a mother and an entrepreneur. How do you inspire girls today?
You must to be brave. That is number one thing.
Then you need to be independent. If you want to do something, you must be able to take care of yourself, then you can take care of others. Do not rely on others. Don’t wait on others to care for you.
You should be confident. If you fall down that is okay. This will help you to grow. You should tell yourself, “I am full of sunshine, failure is nothing.” You need to have a positive attitude toward life. Don’t be pessimistic. Always think positively. Everything has a positive side and negative side. So choose the positive side. This will help you to become an invincible person. But if you choose to react to life with negative attitude that will bring you into disaster and your life will be wasted. Stay positive and be brave.
