Munich Likes You
I´m sure most of you have already heard of the “Oktoberfest” that takes place in Munich each year. In October 2012 however, there was another reason to celebrate as FedEx started operating a B777F out of Munich airport. Since the beginning of October, the state-of-the-art aircraft has been flying four times a week from Munich to Memphis via Milan, Italy. With this flight, FedEx offers the fastest connectivity from Munich to the U.S. – including next-day delivery to 99% of the U.S. for shipments originating in the Munich region.
So Munich is doubly lucky to have the famous Oktoberfest and a FedEx B777 – but do you have any idea what else the city has to offer? Not really? Okay, let me give you some background information:
- Munich is the capital of the state of Bavaria
- It is the third largest city in Germany, behind Berlin and Hamburg, with more than 1.4 million people living within the city limits
- The city´s motto is “Munich likes you”
With a successful economy and high export quota, Bavaria is one of the top foreign trade states in Germany, exporting goods worth €160 billion in 2011. The U.S. was 2011’s most important export market, followed by China, Austria, Italy and France.
As you can imagine, a trade region like this is absolutely reliant on excellent transport links, good infrastructure and, of course, having an airport close by. The Munich “Franz Josef Strauss” airport (IATA code MUC) replaced the former Munich Riem airport and began operating in 1992. Today, the airport is one of the largest aviation hubs in Germany. It ranks second place nationally behind Frankfurt am Main airport when measured against the number of passengers and fourth when measured according to freight volume. That is why many of the world’s leading logistics companies have offices at Munich airport.
Speaking of which, it’s time to tell you more about FedEx in Munich. We have served the Munich area since 1984 and currently operate in three locations: we have two stations in Garching-Hochbrueck and Hohenbrunn-Riemerling, and a sorting center at Munich airport. Between them, our operations employ over 100 team members in the Munich area. Along with Cologne Bonn, where we operate our Central and Eastern Europe hub and Frankfurt am Main, Munich airport is one of our most important gateways in Germany. Just recently in fact, we´ve implemented a new sorting system at Munich airport which has the capacity to sort up to 3,000 shipments per hour. So we´re prepared to serve our customers to the very best of our ability and we´re very glad to say: Munich, we like you too!
