My Favorite Place in the World
Chengdu, China is home to many wonders. For me, it has the best spicy food in China, with both “ma” numbing spices and “la” hot spices. It is also home to beautiful mountains and forests. But Chengdu is probably most famous for housing one of China’s national treasures – the giant panda.
At FedEx, we have been honored to play a role in the preservation of the giant panda. Most recently, we delivered two giant pandas from the United States to Chengdu. These two pandas, Tai Shan and Mei Lan, have now joined the panda breeding program and will play a part in increasing the giant panda population, which is now at fewer than 1,600 in the wild.
I was very happy to see FedEx dedication to the giant panda has extended to a Conservation International reforestation project that will reforest areas that were destroyed by the May 2008 earthquake in Sichuan Province. The reforestation effort will primarily involve planting native plant species such as bamboo, which will restore and protect the panda’s habitat as well as provide the animal’s primary food source.
The forestry project will impact more than the livelihood of the giant panda, it will also help to maintain the Yangtze River watershed, an important agricultural area for China. For me, the recent severe drought in southern China, makes me realize just how important this reforestation effort is not just for the giant panda, but for the thousands of people who rely on its role in the overarching ecosystem.
I am awed and humbled by all that people have done and continue to do to help the people of Sichuan province. I am proud of my company for their dedication and commitment to a sustainable ecosystem in one of my favorite places in the world.
