NBC Show Highlights the Stories That Make FedEx Great
I recently had the pleasure of helping to host NBC’s Brian Williams at the FedEx World Hub in Memphis. Brian was in town to film a profile of FedEx and our founder Fred Smith for his new show, Rock Center with Brian Williams which aired Wednesday night. We gave him the full FedEx Express immersion that night including a jump seat ride in one of our newest B777’s from Newark to Memphis with Captain Paul Cassel, an opportunity to stand on the tarmac while some of our 145 planes landing that night taxied in the distance, a look into the package sorting at the Matrix and the SPSS (which he likened to the candy factory from I Love Lucy) while speaking to a few our front line employees who make the magic happen every night, a chat with Paul Tronsor at FedEx Global Operations Control and a quick check of the weather with one of our 15 meteorologists.
The following day, he spoke with our chairman and CEO Fred Smith about several topics including the birth of FedEx and the future of our company and, make no mistake, our future is very bright. From 186 packages our first night in business on April 17, 1973 to the 8.5 million we now ship a day through the networks of FedEx Express, FedEx Ground and FedEx Freight, we’ve come a long way. We even recently had our busiest day in FedEx history when we moved about 17 million shipments on Dec. 12, 2011. A large part of this was driven by e-commerce and handled by our FedEx Ground and FedEx SmartPost networks. Almost 40 years ago, we were born as the first express company in the business and created the industry. We are now a diversified transportation company providing a full portfolio of solutions including through our shipping networks and the retail network of FedEx Office.
I was incredibly proud to showcase the thousands of employees who make miracles happen every day. At FedEx, whether it is a last minute alteration to a wedding dress or a life saving medication, every single package is the golden package. We had the chance to show one of our generation’s preeminent journalists the purple spirit of FedEx in action – the mantra that drives each and every one of us, every single day – that we will make every FedEx experience outstanding.
