Pittsburgh Steelers Help Score Toys for Children

December 10, 2009

How far would you go to meet your favorite celebrities or professional athletes? Would you wait in line for an entire day for an autograph? If you are a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, you might be nodding your head ‘yes.’

Pittsburgh natives are especially known for their unwavering support of the black and gold, and one man proved to be the biggest fan – waiting in line for 12 hours at a local mall to receive autographs from three Pittsburgh Steelers. But the best part of it all? It was to help brighten the spirits of kids who have to spend their holidays inside the walls of the hospital.

This holiday season, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley, defensive end Ziggy Hood and quarterback Dennis Dixon teamed up with FedEx Ground and a local mall to host the 8th annual toy drive benefiting Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. In exchange for the donation of a new, unwrapped toy to benefit Children’s Child Life Department, fans received autographs from the three players.

More than 1,200 Pittsburgh Steelers fans waited in a line that snaked around the mall to not only meet a few of the players but to also support this worthy cause. FedEx volunteers served as elves, helping to collect the gifts, and the FedEx Special Delivery van, which supports local charities throughout the year, was onsite to serve as Santa’s sleigh, delivering the packages to the hospital.

“The fact that these guys take the time to help children shows what Pittsburgh is all about,” said Hope Iverson, FedEx volunteer. “I’ve been converted into a Steelers fan because of it.”

Boosting the spirits of hundreds of sick children and providing highly sought after autographs to hundreds of Pittsburgh Steelers fans proved to be a big win for everyone this holiday season.
