Raising awareness for American Heart Month

February 12, 2014

As a health care professional, it gives me great pleasure to announce that during the month of February, in recognition of American Heart Month, FedEx is raising awareness about heart disease and helping team members identify and respond to its leading risk factors.  This commitment to health promotion and wellness is a key component in the FedEx Health Care strategy. In 2014, FedEx is launching new benefit programs to help employees improve their health and productivity.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S. and a major cause of disability. Every year, about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack and nearly 600,000 people die from heart disease.  More than one in three adults has some type of cardiovascular disease.

Though disheartening (no pun intended), 80% of heart disease cases are preventable and controllable. Some health conditions and lifestyle factors can put people at a higher risk for developing heart disease. However, most individuals can help prevent heart disease by following these key American Heart Association recommendations.

  • Don’t smoke, and avoid second-hand smoke.
  • Lower your blood pressure if it’s high and keep it under control.
  • Eat a healthy diet low in saturated fat, trans-fat, cholesterol and salt.
  • Be physically active.
  • Keep your weight under control.
  • Get regular medical check-ups.
  • Follow your doctor’s orders for taking medicine.
  • Get tested for diabetes and control your blood sugar if you have diabetes.

By promoting wellness and American Heart Month, FedEx is encouraging its’ team members to protect their heart in order to live a longer and healthier life.  I am delighted to be employed by a company that values both internal customers as well as external ones.
