Students from Sweden “Bag” FedEx Access Award!
This summer, a team of student entrepreneurs from Sweden created a unique company and developed, marketed and sold a stylish product line that one would expect to see dangling from the arms of the high-fashion-minded.
The product, a line of overnight travel bags, was manufactured from recycled flooring materials! The team, named “Bolsa”, competed with teams from 32 other European countries in this year’s 21st annual Junior Achievement-Young Enterprise European Company of the year Competition held in Cagliari, Italy.
Because of their demonstrated knowledge of the global marketplace, a commitment to making an environmentally friendly product, and their successful execution of their business plan in selling their stylish product, Bolsa won the FedEx Access award. The award goes to the JA-YE student company which best demonstrates their understanding and application of global access, leveraging international trade to create jobs, grow small businesses, expand global development and improve the environment.
The overall competition has high school students launching their own companies, creating new products and services, developing business plans, selling stock in their companies, electing officers, bringing their products and services to market and gaining knowledge of many additional requirements related to creating and running a real business. Serving as a judge for the competition and the FedEx Access award, I was able to interact with the students and experience firsthand their incredible enthusiasm, professionalism, drive and contagious entrepreneurial energy.
Research in Europe has shown that participants in the JA Company program are 400% more likely to create a small business as adults than the general population. FedEx sponsors the competition to help equip these young entrepreneurs to enter the global marketplace. Our team members around the world have opportunities to mentor these young students and when they actually do launch their own businesses,
FedEx will be there with our powerful global transportation network to help them achieve success! JA-YE just posted a terrific, brief video recap of the competition on their YouTube channel at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igFC_cruI1s.
