FedEx Chairman, President and CEO, Fred Smith has said of our nation's dependence on oil, "What is needed now is an urgent, national commitment to action." As oil prices once again top $100 a barrel, we're unveiling a video that we hope will help bring more attention to doing just that.

At an awards ceremony earlier this week, the UCLA Anderson School of Business bestowed the John Wooden Leadership Award on FedEx founder and CEO Frederick W. Smith. During dinner at the award ceremony, the subject of FedEx’s “Charge Up Route 66” road trip introducing our new all-electric van came up. A FedEx customer posed an interesting question, something along the lines of “you just have one truck, isn’t this just about PR?”

The all-electric vehicle project has been a bit more challenging than the implementation of the Hybrid-Electric delivery vehicles we have deployed. (We started with four of them in 2004, and are operating more than 300 now.) This all-electric vehicle, though, was purpose-built, meaning every system in the vehicle must be designed, tested and built from scratch. To build an entire vehicle from scratch tests the mettle of automotive engineers and customers alike.

I had the pleasure to introduce the first all electric, zero emission pickup and delivery vehicle into the global fleet at Fedex Express. This truck, produced by Modec, a UK company will be serving our customers in London as an emission free vehicle. The Modec delivery truck joins the largest hybrid fleet in the world and brings our sustainable vehicle technology from low emission vehicles to emission free vehicles. Nine other Modec vehicles will be serving London by the spring of 2009 expanding the number of customers we can serve without producing any emissions.

There’s been lots of discussion recently about energy reform and America’s need to reduce its dependence on foreign oil. Given the gravity of this issue, I truly believe the outcome of this national conversation will be a defining moment in American history. To me, the solution to U.S. energy independence consists of three fundamental pillars.
