The first thing you think is “That’s a lot of bikes!” Snaking their way over rambling mountains, along pristine coastal cliffs, and through towering western evergreens, the cyclists pedaled mile after arduous mile. Our FedEx team just finished a 545-mile bicycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. This is my sixth year of riding, and the fabulous views of the California coast and valleys seem fresh and new every year. Most important, we do it for a good cause – raising funds to combat HIV/AIDS.

Today, he’s just as famous for having a big heart for community service. The Magic Johnson Foundation, established in 1991, serves more than 250,000 disadvantaged persons annually through a variety of community outreach services.

This spring it has been my privilege to help organize urban conservation projects for FedEx volunteers in Boston, MA and Orange County, CA. The actual service projects and their geographic locations couldn’t have been more different, but the commitment and spirit of our FedEx volunteers was exactly the same on both coasts.

This week I'm climbing on my bicycle in San Francisco and pedaling…to Los Angeles. I’ve done it several times now. Each time, usually around the halfway point, Pismo Beach, I say to myself, “There’s gotta be an easier way to get down to LA.” And each time, I answer myself: “Yep. There are easier ways. But none as rewarding.”
