Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

It was Martin Luther King, Jr. day. As the morning rolled around, my alarm went faulty. As a woman who is known for being inappropriately early for everything in life – flights, dentist appointments, dinner at Mom’s, etc. – imagine my frazzled state when I realized I slept in. It was just the start to a bad day, and I was in a foul mood. But we had a mentoring and volunteering project planned so I grudgingly loaded my car with supplies for the day’s service project and was on my way.

Pandas Prefer to Fly FedEx Express

Once again, FedEx has been entrusted to transport giant pandas internationally, this time from the U.S. to China.  On February 4, the “FedEx Panda Express” – a custom-decaled 777F aircraft – will take flight from Washington, D.C. with two giant pandas destined for their new homes in China.  Tai Shan, a 4-and-a-half-year-old male panda, and Mei Lan, a 3-year-old female panda, were both born in the U.S. and will depart for China as part of broader giant panda conservation programs designed to help save this endangered species.

Not the First Humanitarian Effort in Haiti

Last night when I heard the news of the Haitian earthquake and its incredible devastation I knew from experience that FedEx team members would respond immediately to help those in need. In 2006 I was honored to receive the FedEx Humanitarian Award as part of our effort to help this small country recover from another natural disaster. A year earlier Hurricane Katrina cut a destructive path through Haiti. A group of FedEx Express employees in Minnesota and South Dakota stepped up to deliver the Purple Promise to the Bon Samaritan Hospital in Cazeau, Haiti.

SHANGHAI, CHINA: Our Donated Clothing are Symbols of Care and Love By: Lily Lin

Since the announcement of our annual FedEx Cares Week, team members from China have participated in different activities. In Shanghai, team members donated clothing for people living in poor areas. On the evening of September 16, volunteers from different FedEx offices in Shanghai came to the headquarters to sort and pack the donated clothing. They gathered in a big conference room and participated in our activity despite the fact that they just finished a full work day of work.

Salute to FedEx Charters and FedEx Express Operations

FedEx Corporate Contributions received a most unusual request: to transport 7 Beluga whales and 4 dolphins to a temporary home while Shedd Aquarium in Chicago was under renovation.  Two planes transported the special cargo under the direction of FedEx Charters team including Dave Lange, Walter Hooker, George Miller and Larry Ashkenaz in the fall of 2008.  Many details had to be worked out: making sure planes were available, reviewing flight schedules in and out of both airports, lining up crew and extra equipment such as the 40,000 pound capacity forklifts, gaining airfield and security cle

The Road Goes on Forever and the Party Never Ends

That’s the title of a Robert Earl Keen song that reminds me of my college days.  I’ve developed quite the road trip soundtrack, but it’s a fitting summary title for my summer tour with the hybrids.  The 92 hybrids that have ventured across the country have anywhere from 300,000 to 500,000 revenue service miles on them.  They’ve been given a new engine, new paint job and a new life as a cleaner vehicle ready to serve FedEx customers in California.  FedEx Express’ John Formisano commented, “It’s the very definition of recycling.”
