Rebuilding Haiti for Sustainable Success

While the world is still grappling with the pressing need to save lives in the aftermath of one of the worst natural disasters to hit the Western hemisphere, it is also confronted with the challenge of rebuilding Haiti into a prosperous nation with a sustainable economy.  From the ashes and devastation may come Haiti’s greatest opportunity to construct a solid and stable country that can actively participate in and contribute to the world economy.

Tears at Work

So it’s Monday afternoon and I’m sitting here tearing up at work. As we continue with our Haiti relief efforts, we always keep our senior management team in the loop. What so moved me this afternoon is that, once again, within minutes of sending out our latest update we received notes of encouraging support from our officers. As their responses came in, once again – almost immediately, tears of appreciation just welled up and filled my eyes.

First FedEx Flight Direct to Haiti with Relief Supplies Departs

The first FedEx Express direct flight to Haiti departs from Miami International Airport with food and water for the Haiti Earthquake victims. The FedEx Express Boeing freighter will deliver up to 40,000 pounds of relief supplies donated by local, Florida nonprofit organizations. Juan Cento, FedEx Express President, Latin America and Caribbean Division will be on-site for media interviews. The flight left on Sunday, January 17, 2010 at approximately 9:30am EST from the FedEx Express Gateway Hub.

Heroes for Haiti

As I sat down to write this story, I turned on the news and was shocked to hear that Haiti had been hit by a devastating earthquake. I hope others are as generous as the school children I met today and open their hearts to help the citizens of one of the poorest countries as they begin the long recovery process.

FedEx, Health Care Companies Step Up For Direct Relief International’s Quake Response SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—Direct Relief International’s efforts to assist victims of the Haiti earthquake were today bolstered by FedEx, which is covering all air freight shipping costs for  Direct Relief’s response, as well as dozens of other corporations that are providing cash or in-kind contributions.

Not the First Humanitarian Effort in Haiti

Last night when I heard the news of the Haitian earthquake and its incredible devastation I knew from experience that FedEx team members would respond immediately to help those in need. In 2006 I was honored to receive the FedEx Humanitarian Award as part of our effort to help this small country recover from another natural disaster. A year earlier Hurricane Katrina cut a destructive path through Haiti. A group of FedEx Express employees in Minnesota and South Dakota stepped up to deliver the Purple Promise to the Bon Samaritan Hospital in Cazeau, Haiti.

FedEx Response to Haiti

The first details to emerge from Haiti after a 7.0 earthquake struck were devastating. Relief agencies estimated the toll could climb to more than 100,000 people. The capital city of Port-au-Prince was leveled. Infrastructure was severely damaged or destroyed.
