FedEx Contractor Rescues Police Officer Under Attack

Mike Elgas, a driver for Wkforce, Inc,  Service Provider to FedEx Ground, risked his own life to save the life of a police officer who was being assaulted.  It all started as an ordinary day as Mike stopped for breakfast on his way to work in Las Vegas, NV. While eating he noticed a belligerent customer overpower a police officer, knock him to the ground, and begin punching and yelling that he was going to kill him.

Moving the Chilean Miners’ rescue capsule from Point A to Point B – that’s it! Or is that all that’s really involved?

FedEx Express was selected a few months ago by the Chilean Copper Corporation (CODELCO) and the Ministry of Mining for the Republic of Chile as the Official Carrier of the Fénix capsule used to rescue miners trapped in the San Jose mine last year.We took on the responsibility to move the capsule, all 14 feet and 800 pounds of it to Canada, Germany and Washington, D.C. – where it is getting ready to be displayed at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History beginning Friday in an exhibition titled “Against All Odds”.

How do you move an 800-pound, 14-foot long capsule around the world? Very carefully, that’s how. That was the challenge that FedEx was presented when it was selected as the Official Carrier of the Fénix capsule used to rescue miners trapped in the San Jose mine in Chile last year as it toured from the U.S. to Canada and Germany.
