However, at a closer look you’ll see that all of the above objects are critical.By critical shipments I mean high value, extremely time or temperature sensitive, or even irreplaceable objects – making it imperative that their location and temperature is known at all times.

FedEx and Direct Relief (formerly Direct Relief International) have a relationship that goes back more than 20 years. From Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, to numerous tsunamis and floods in Asia, to the earthquake in Haiti in 2010; FedEx has worked closely with Direct Relief to deliver much-needed aid to disaster-affected areas both domestically and abroad.

How old is the oldest person you know personally? 80? 90? 100? These numbers are well within reach given today’s life expectancy. Had I asked the same question in 1913 instead of 2013, the answers may have been more like 50 or 55. The average life expectancy continues to rise, and with it, new trends in the global health care industry.

I recently had the honor of introducing our founder and CEO, Frederick W. Smith, at the FedEx HealthCare Solutions Summit in New York City. In that introduction, I talked about the innovative spirit that has powered FedEx from its inception, and how the passionate curiosity of this business icon permeates the entire culture of the company. In the beginning he asked that age-old question “What if…?”, and the world is a better place as a result.

Cold Chain is a term used to characterize temperature-controlled storage, distribution and transportation. The term can be misleading since it does not refer to “cold” temperatures in particular. Products that are sensitive to temperature variations, whether they be perishables such as fruits and vegetables or more sophisticated drugs and medical devices, are included in the term “cold chain”. However, cold chain is often more narrowly used in reference to temperature and time-sensitive high value healthcare products.
