Walking Their Way to Health and Happiness
You may have heard the phrase, “sitting is the new smoking.” Health experts regularly preach about inactivity and its negative impact on your health. You might not know that inactivity for long period of times is bad even if you exercise. So just because you make a daily visit to the gym, you shouldn’t spend the rest of the day on your backside.
For those of us with desk jobs, we may sit for up to 15 hours a day. To minimize the potential health risks that can come from being sedentary, health experts say it’s important to mix in activity throughout the day. While fitness trackers have made 10,000 steps the new standard, any exercise effort is better than nothing at all. Having a conversation face-to face-instead of email, taking a stroll during a conference call, and walking to clear your mind are small changes that can make a big difference in your health.
Healthways Wellness Director Mary Cay Oyler works with FedEx to encourage a “culture of well-being”. This recently resulted in pairing team members with a buddy for energy-producing walk breaks throughout the campus.
Mary Cay explains “FedEx Headquarters is perfectly designed to encourage walking. If you walked from one building to the next throughout the campus it would be about two miles. Plus there is a walking trail outside for a breath of fresh air. Walking is a great way to connect with your co-workers, have fun, and disconnect from screens, which can be isolating.”
Following the success of the walking buddy program, the 300 Million Steps Challenge launched. The goal of the program is for team members to complete 300 million steps during the month of March. “We have close to 10,000 people signed up. It’s a healthy competition between FedEx teams with the idea to get up and move, get as many steps in as possible, with the hopes that you will continue doing so after March,” says Mary Cay.
